These classic Crusader helms come in many styles. You often see these shorter helms in manuscript illustrations, and their erstwhile popularity will be apparent to you once you try one on. As this one doesn't fully encapsulate the neck, and bulges around the nose and mouth, the air-flow is excellent. Other similar (longer) helmets may cover a little more of the lower neck and even down to the clavicle, but this also cuts off a great deal of outside air and traps some carbon dioxide within the helm.. Some people (myself included) find such helmets impossible to fight in, because of breathing issues. This one, however, is an absolute joy to wear. Our 16g (heavy duty) Templar helm weighs 2.886 Kilos, has a circumference of 76cm, an external width of 24.5cm, an external length of 25cm and a height of 30cm. It comes complete with a fully adjustable suspension liner. The chinstrap consists of two "Y" shaped strap. This helmet has an extra long ocularium (or vision slit) each being just over 9cm long. The front, has 18 ornate ventilation holes which also allow for some downward vision. In classic Templar style, is reinforced with a brass cross: giving formidable sword-proof facial protection. This helm will comfortably fit anybody with a hat size of 59 to 63. If you take a medium hat size, there's plenty of room beneath this for an an additional interior arming cap and chain mail coif. This type of helm, may seem claustrophobic to our eyes, and indeed, wearing such helmets partially restricts breathing, Read more

By the end of the 13th century, the flat-topped helm was being given up in favour of the ' Sugarloaf' helm (as it is generally called). The importance of a ' glancing surface ' in armour was being better appreciated by the late 1200’s. Although thickness of material was of some importance in defensive armour, this providing of curved smooth surfaces from which a weapon would slip, was considered to be of supreme importance by the armour-smiths of later periods. With these early bullet-shaped helms (as indeed with nearly all great helms) the vision and breathing apertures were pierced in the plates of the helm itself and were not part of a movable visor – which was a later innovation. They do not seem to have been bolted on to the shoulders, as were the fifteenth and sixteenth century tilting helms, but rested upon the crown of the head. For this reason an arming cap (padded coif) was considered a necessary accompaniment, and we may surmise that the interior was further padded with fur, sheepskin or a quilted material, affording a more secure fit, extra comfort and supplementary protection to the wearer. This helmet comes with a fully adjustable suspension liner and chinstrap and is made from battle-ready grade 16 gauge steel. Its steel body is further reinforced by brass banding across the face, and its highly deflective shape adds yet more to strength and durability: so overall, it's a helmet that can take a lot of punishment. It weighs just over 3 Kilos. It has an outer circumference Read more

HILLSIDE FORGE River Thames Viking Sword.Superlative & Unique Heirloom Quality Piece Heavy Duty (wearable) Suede Leather Clad Sheath Authentic Design Hand Forged Full Tang Balanced Sharp -0-CAUTION – THIS IS A FULLY FUNCTIONAL MARTIAL WEAPON – DECOMISSION THE BLADE BEFORE WALL MOUNTING. DO NOT USE FOR SPARRING. DO NOT USE FOR THEATRICAL OR RE-ENACTMENT PURPOSES. CHECK THE LAWS IN YOUR STATE OR COUNTRY PERTAINING TO WEAPONS OWNERSHIP BEFORE MAKING YOUR PURCHASE. STORE SAFELY AND HANDLE WITH CAUTION. -0-In a word, this sword looks superb. The entire piece feels rock solid, and the aesthetics of the sword are excellent. The blade exhibits no wavering and has smooth, clean lines. The fuller gently flows up the blade, and the polish is very even, almost up to a mirror finish, though not quite, which makes the sword appear majestic without looking like cheap stainless steel knock offs. This is a very lightweight sword, but like so many Viking styled swords, it has a wicked blade presence. The combination of these two factors makes a sword with a very powerful blow that isn't hard to control. Cuts are effortless, easy to control, and highly effective. The mass in the blade near the tip actually seems to propel the sword during a swing. This sword would produce devastating cuts and slashes against historically outfitted warriors. The grip and scabbard, which finishes off the sword nicely, is oxblood-colour suede leather.. Length: 91.5 cm Weight: 1.23 kg Crossguard: 9.7 cm Grip: 11.8 cm (suede leather wrap) Blade width: 4.4cm (tapering) With Read more

Vambraces (also called forearm guards) are "tubular" or "gutter" defenses for the forearm, developed first in the ancient world by the Romans, but only formally named during the early 14th century. They were generally made of leather. Archers vambraces are different as they guard the underside of the forearm against the twang of a bowstring, and the lace is on the other side. These ones are combat vambraces: whereby the leather protection is on the outside of the forearm, which are more likely to receive blows. Fashioned from plough parts, heated in an improvised forge and beaten into shape over a green log, the primitive armour worn by Ned Kelly (1855–1880) and his gang at the siege of Glenrowan is as familiar today as the bushrangers’ exploits. The original armour was effective. The helmet alone stopped at least two bullets, thus saving Ned’s life. At trial, Ned claimed that he and his gang manufactured the armour for themselves; however, there was not a blacksmith amongst the gang so his statement was (at best) highly unlikely. Although the idea for bullet-proof armour was definitely Ned’s, he probably took credit for its manufacture to cover for the true maker, who would have faced prosecution for aiding the gang. Consequently, a certain degree of mystery surrounds the helmet. We will never know who made it and where it really came from. The two-day siege at Glenrowan, Victoria, in June Read more
